How to Play

SUMMARY

In the "Road to the Kentucky Derby Showdown" contest, TwinSpires.com players can compete for a $1,000,000 Jackpot while also competing for Kentucky Derby merchandise, tickets and shares of a $10,000 prize. The contest begins February 7 and concludes with the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 2, 2015. Players compete in the contest by placing a designated contest wager on the official contest races. For the purposes of contest play, a designated contest wager is defined as a player’s first $20 Show wager on a single horse or entry on an official contest race. In the event a player's first $20 Show wager is placed on a horse that is scratched, s/he may place another $20 Show wager and it will count in the contest. Refer to the Official Contest Race Schedule for a list of official contest races.

PREP ROUND PLAY - COMPETE FOR KENTUCKY DERBY TICKETS AND MERCHANDISE

There are two separate rounds of play in Road to the Kentucky Derby Showdown, PREP ROUND PLAY and FINAL ROUND PLAY. Each round offers a different set of prizes. In PREP ROUND PLAY, the objective is to cash a winning contest wager in as many of the 19 official contest races as possible.

PREP ROUND PLAY consists of 19 designated Road to the Kentucky Derby races, starting on February 7 and ending on April 18. See the Official Race Schedule for contest races. Follow the instructions below to participate in the contest. Failure to follow the instructions may result in disqualification from winning a prize.

HOW TO PLAY

1) The contest begins on Saturday, February 7 with a $20 Show bet on the Withers Stakes at Aqueduct and a $20 Show bet on the Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita.

2) PREP ROUND PLAY, in which players compete for Kentucky Derby and Oaks Tickets and Kentucky Derby merchandise, consists of 19 races and ends with a $20 Show bet on the Coolmore Lexington Stakes and a $20 Show bet on the Arkansas Derby on Saturday, April 11.

3) Players may participate in Prep Round Play by placing a $20 Show wager on one (1) horse or entry on the 19 official contest races (see race schedule for details).

4) Only a player's first $20 Show wager will count as his or her official contest wager.

5) Wagers using multiple horses/betting interests are not eligible for contest play - no exceptions will be made.

6) Wagers using Coupled Entries, such as (1/1A) are permitted.

7) Combination Win/Place/Show, Win/Show or Place/Show wagers are not eligible for contest play – no exceptions will be made.

8) SCRATCHES MUST BE RE-BET: Wagers on scratched horses will not count in the contest. There will be no favorite replacements for scratched horses. In the event a player's first $20 Show wager on a designated contest race is refunded due to a scratch, s/he may place another $20 Show wager in the same race and it will count as his or her official contest wager.

Each time you cash a winning contest wager, you increase your chances of winning one of the 20 Prep Round Prizes. Check the Leaderboard each week to see who is in the running to win a prize.

PREP ROUND PRIZES

PREP ROUND PLAY ends with the running of the Coolemore Lexington Stakes on April 18. At the end of PREP ROUND PLAY, the 20 players with the most winning contest wagers will earn the following prizes:

  • 1st place: A pair of tickets to the 2016 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.
  • 2nd – 10th place: An official Kentucky Derby Polo Shirt.
  • 11th  – 20th place: An official Kentucky Derby Hat.

Tiebreaker rules: If there is a tie in any position on the Leaderboard, the order of finish will be determined by the player whose winning contest wagers returned the highest cumulative winnings. If a tie still remains, the higher position will be awarded to the player who selected the most first place finishers from his or her winning contest wagers. If a tie still remains the higher position will be awarded to the player who selected the most second place finishers from his or her losing contest wagers. If a tie still remains, TwinSpires.com will select an alternative method of breaking the tie.

In the event a player(s) completes PREP ROUND PLAY with a perfect 19 winning contest wagers, he or she will be eligible to compete for the $1,000,000 Jackpot Prize in FINAL ROUND PLAY.

FINAL ROUND PLAY - COMPETE FOR ONE OR MORE SHARES OF $10,000 IN CASH PRIZES

Players who have placed at least one (1) winning contest wager in PREP ROUND PLAY are eligible to participate in FINAL ROUND PLAY. The objective of FINAL ROUND PLAY is to simply cash winning contest wager ($20 Show) on the Kentucky Derby, on Saturday, May 2. The same conditions on contest wagering described in PREP ROUND PLAY also apply to FINAL ROUND PLAY.

If a Player places a winning $20 Show bet on a single horse or entry on the Kentucky Derby, he or she will earn as many shares of the $10,000 cash prize as winning contest wagers he or she had placed in PREP ROUND PLAY.

After the Kentucky Derby is declared official, the single share value will by calculated by dividing $10,000 by all outstanding shares earned by each FINAL ROUND winner. The amount a player wins will equal the single share value multiplied by how many winning contest wagers he or she placed in PREP ROUND PLAY. The single share value will depend largely upon which horses finish third or better in the Kentucky Derby, how many players place winning contest wagers on the Kentucky Derby and how many winning contest wagers the FIINAL ROUND winners placed during PREP ROUND PLAY.

Players may earn from 1 to 18 shares of the $10,000 cash prize. In the event there is a $1,000,000 Jackpot winner or winners, the 19 winning contest wagers attributed to each Jackpot winner in PREP ROUND PLAY will be removed from the calculation of the single share value.

HOW TO WIN THE $1 MILLION JACKPOT PRIZE*

Any player or players who complete PREP ROUND PLAY with 19 winning contest wagers and place a winning contest wager in FINAL ROUND PLAY (20 winning contest wagers total) will be eligible to win or split the $1,000,000 Jackpot Prize with all other players who have recorded 20 winning contest wagers.

*$1,000,000 Jackpot Prize will be paid in the form of a 40-year annuity, consisting of 40 annual payments of $25,000 each without interest.

In the event contest wagering is not available in at least 18 of 20 official contest races, the $1,000,000 Jackpot prize will not be awarded.
