HOW CAN I COMPETE?

Competing to top the TwinSpires.com Leaderboard is easy. There is no entry fee to compete in the leaderboard contests. All you need to do is designate your "real money' wagers as leaderboard wagers and you will start moving up the Leaderboard.

OK. I'm in. How does it work?

  • Step 1: There are two ways to play so pick a strategy. You can either decide to try top our "Points Leaderboard" or our "ROI Leaderboard". The "Points Leaderboard" rewards you for picking winners regardless of the price. The "ROI Leaderboard" rewards you for finding value and amassing a large bankroll with your selections. Read below to learn more about how each Leaderboard is scored.
  • Step 2: Select which Leaderboards you want to try to win. You can compete to top the "Win", "Place", or "Show" Leaderboard or compete in each one.
  • Step 3: Designate your real money wagers as "Leaderboard Wagers" by selecting a check box on the TwinSpires.com wagering interface. The check box will automatically appear when you construct an eligible "Leaderboard Wager". Each Leaderboard Wager must be $5 for Win, $10 for Place and $20 for Show. HOW TO PLAY

(updated 7/03/08)

The goal of the contest is to earn the largest bankroll (ROI) or accumulate the most Points in the designated Leaderboard of the player's choosing during any given month. Players can participate in as many Leaderboards as they want. There are a total of six Leaderboard contests that one can participate in:

  • $5 Win - ROI
  • $5 Win - Points
  • $10 Place - ROI
  • $10 Place - Points
  • $20 Show - ROI
  • $20 Show - Points

When you place a wager at the designated amount per wager type, e.g. $5 win, you will see a new checkbox appear in the wagering section allowing you to make it a Leaderboard contest wager. You must check this box in order for the wager to count towards the Leaderboard contest.

To designate a wager as a Leaderboard wager, you will need to mark a checkbox on the wagering frame that reads "Make this a Leaderboard wager." This checkbox will only appear for those wagers where Leaderboard wagering is permitted. A Leaderboard wager is only permitted for "Win," "Place," or "Show" wagers involving a single betting interest. In addition, a Leaderboard "Win" wager is only permitted when the Win wager amount is exactly $5. And, a Leaderboard "Place" wager is only permitted when the Place wager amount is exactly $10. And, a Leaderboard "Show" wager is only permitted when the Show wager amount is exactly $20. Multiple bets such as Win/Place can not be designated as Leaderboard wagers.

You will be automatically entered in both "ways to win" (Points and ROI) when successfully placing a Leaderboard wager. It is up to the player's own choosing to decide his or her own best strategy depending on the Leaderboard (Points or ROI) structure. Regardless, the same Leaderboard bet will counts towards both Leaderboards for the same wager type. Participants can not designate separate bets for Points or ROI for the same wager type, e.g. Place.

SCORING

Each calendar month will open and close a new Leaderboard for that month. For both the points and the ROI category there will be a separate Leaderboard for win, place and show. There will also be an Annual Leaderboard which will display the top scores from the monthly contest.

Points Leaderboard Scoring:

You will be allowed to designate 5 maximum wagers per day per bet type as your Leaderboard wagers and will be required to make a minimum of 40 Leaderboard wagers per month per bet type in order to be eligible for the Leaderboard.

You will earn 1 point for each winning wager and will earn a bonus of 2 points for any day in which all five of your selections were winners, based on the wager type. For example, five "show" wagers that cash based on the horses finishing in the money are considered "winning" wagers and would earn the 2-point bonus. The maximum amount of points a players could score in any single day is 7 per Leaderboard.

There is a maximum of 80 wagers per month per Leaderboard. This can be completed in 16 days at 5 wagers per day or a mix of more days and less wagers per day.

All contest wagers made where there is a scratch or a refund should not count against the individuals maximum wagers for the day or month.

The player with the highest accumulated Points Total in any given month from July to November, 2008 will be the Winner and will receive a qualifying spot to the 2009 National Handicapping Championship. There are six Grand Prize winners, one for each of the six Leaderboards.

ROI Leaderboard Scoring:

ROI will be calculated using parimutual payoffs and will be based on the total return of the winning wagers less the amount wagered on the winning bets. The total amount of the payoff per leaderboard wager will be aggregated for the player's monthly score. For example: If you made five "Win" leaderboard wagers at $5 each and two of those wagers won returning a total of $22.00, your ROI score for the day would be $12.00 ($22 minus the $10 wagered).. If all five of your wagers lost, your ROI score for the day would be $0.00.

There is a maximum of 80 wagers per month per leaderboard. This can be completed in 16 days at 5 wagers per day or a mix of more days and less wagers per day. You are not required to make any wagers on any day, but the more you participate up to the 80-wager max, the better your chances of winning.

All contest wagers made where there is a scratch or a refund will not count against the individuals maximum wagers for the day or month.

The player with the highest accumulated bankroll (ROI) in any given month from July to November, 2008 will be the Winner and will receive a qualifying spot to the 2009 National Handicapping Championship. There are six Grand Prize winners, one for each of the six Leaderboards.

This is an Internet-based game, entries will only be accepted through the account wagering site TwinSpires.com. One entry per person are allowed. More than 1 entry per TwinSpires account holder/contest participant are cause for disqualification of all related entries. A player may not submit more than one entry with different names, addresses, wagering accounts, etc. TwinSpires reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any player which TwinSpires believes has submitted more than one entry in the contest.

This is an Internet-based contest. Entries will only be accepted through the online wagering interface at TwinSpires.com using real wagering dollars. No faxed, mailed, electronically mailed or telephone entries are allowed.

CONDITIONS

  1. There is no registration or entry fee required to participate in the Leaderboard contest.
  2. Each player will enter the contest by submitting a wager at the required wagering limit and checking a box on the wagering interface entitled "make this a contest wager." A Leaderboard wager can only placed one time on an individual horse per wager type. For example, you can not place two $5 win bets on the same horse. You are allowed to bet the same horse to Win, Place and Show per the Leaderboard thresholds ($5, $10, $20), but you can not make a duplicate wager on the same horse.
  3. Only wagers in the exact amounts listed below will be eligible for Leaderboard contest wagers:
    $5 Win
    $10 Place
    $20 Show
  4. You are required to make a minimum of 40 Leaderboard wagers per month per bet type in order to be eligible for any one Leaderboard. You can participate in any or all six Leaderboards. The daily maximum number of wagers per wager type is five. The first five Leaderboard wagers (per wager type) each day that are chronologically submitted and accepted by Tote will count towards the daily max. If a member places more than 5 of the same wager type in a given day, only the first 5 will be accepted in the Leaderboard contest.
  5. The system logs the time and date each player enters his or her selections.
  6. Once a wager is submitted, you can not go back and edit the Leaderboard designation of that wager. If you fail to designate a wager as a Leaderboard bet prior to submission, the only solution is to place the same bet again with the proper designation. Likewise, you can not "remove" a Leaderboard designation on a submitted wager.
  7. You can submit multiple Leaderboard wagers in the same race, including multiple wagers of the same type, e.g. win wager. The daily maximum number of wagers per type is five, therefore the maximum number of wagers of the same type per any individual races is five. If more than five runners are selected in a given race, the "contest checkbox" will not appear. Wagers for races contested past Midnight but prior to 2:01 a.m. PT will count towards the previous day's activity.
  8. "*** Leaderboard Wager ***" is prominently displayed on the wager frame ticket whenever the user has designated a wager as a "Leaderboard wager."
  9. Under "Recall Today's Bets," the screen will display all of today's wagers and three astericks, ***, will precede the base wager amount of any Leaderboard wagers you have placed for the day. Furthermore, the base wager amounts displayed in any conditional wager cancellation confirmation messages or any failed conditional wager messages are also preceded by three astericks for any Leaderboard wagers.
  10. Bankrolls for ROI will be determined by track mutual payoffs. ROI will be calculated using parimutual payoffs and will be based on the total return of the winning wagers less the amount wagered on the winning bets. There are no caps on payoffs as these are real wagers. For ROI calculation purposes there are no deductions for losing wagers. It is in the players' best interests to play the maximum numbers of bets allowed (80) per wager type per month.
  11. For each Leaderboard wager submitted, you receive 1 point per winning wager and receive a 2 point bonus if all 5 of your wagers of the same type in a given day are winning wagers. You must place the daily maximum of 5 wagers to be eligible for the bonus system.
  12. The official final order of finish according to the host racetrack will determine the payoffs and whether or not a wager is considering a "winner."
  13. Year-end winners are determined by the highest monthly total scores. The objective is score the highest possible score, for either ROI or Points, in any given month from the start of the contest in July until its conclusion in November, 2008.
  14. A maximum of 2 spots to Las Vegas (one NHC and one World Series entry) can be won by an individual contestant. The top finishers of each of the 6 Annual Leaderboards, based on the highest monthly total during the course of the year, will be awarded the NHC spots. The runner-up on each of the 6 Annual Leaderboards will be awarded a seat in the Coast Casino Horseplayer World Series.

In the event that one individual finishes 1st on multiple Leaderboards at the conclusion of the contest, the following order will be used to determine which spot awards their NHC berth:

    $5 Win Points
    $10 Place Points
    $20 Show Points
    $5 Win ROI
    $10 Place ROI
    $20 Show ROI

For example, if the same individual finished 1st on both the Win Points Leaderboard and the Win ROI Leaderboard, he or she would be awarded the NHC berth based on the finish on the Win Points Leaderboard. He or she would then receive the World Series berth based on the top finish on the Win ROI Leaderboard. Consequently, the runner-up on the Win ROI Leaderboard would be awarded the grand prize of an NHC berth.

In the event there is a tie between two or more players for the Year-end prizes, the following tiebreakers will be used in order:

2nd Highest Monthly score - for the same wager type and Leaderboard.

Highest Monthly score - for the alternative Leaderboard. Therefore, if the tie is for ROI, the highest Points total for the same wager type will break the tie. If the tie is for Points, the ROI total for the same wager type will break the tie.

3rd Highest Monthly score - for the same wager type.
  15. The Leaderboard will be updated on the TwinSpires.com Leaderboard website as soon as possible on the following day. It is the responsibility of the player to bring any alleged error, issue, or complaint to the attention of TwinSpires within 24 hours of its occurrence by sending an email to rich.nilsen@brisnet.com and describing the alleged error, issue or complaint in detail. If TwinSpires is not contacted within 24 hours, TwinSpires is not responsible for making adjustments to the Leaderboard standings.
  16. TwinSpires will make the final decision on any disputes or unforeseen circumstances involving ties.
  17. Conditional Win wagers can also be Leaderboard wagers if designated as such by the player. Submitting Leaderboard Win wagers using the conditional wagering tool may require significantly more monitoring of the wagers by the player throughout the course of the day, since some conditional wagers may "fail" to meet the requirements set by the player. A "failed" wager will not count towards a player's Leaderboard wagers.
  18. Due to significant technical difficulties, TwinSpires.com reserves the right to exclude any given day from the Leaderboard calculations, if it is deemed that contest participation was severely hampered on that day.
  19. TwinSpires is not responsible for players following the rules and guidelines of contest participation. It is solely the player's responsibility to meet contest requirements for correctly submitting their Leaderboard wagers.
  20. TwinSpires may post past performance information, commentary and charts of contest races when appropriate. TwinSpires shall not be liable for any inaccurate, incomplete, or missing information that is posted. Such information is posted only to help players make their selections and any opinions or analysis posted by TwinSpires and/or its affiliates regarding the outcome of the races should not be taken as a recommendation of which horses to select.
  21. Each player agrees that TwinSpires.com may use his or her name and picture for publicity if they are a prize winner without further compensation.
  22. ALL MONETARY VALUES STATED ARE IN U.S. DOLLARS.
  23. All Winners will be required to provide a legally valid identification and eligibility release tax forms in order to claim the cash prize.
  24. Elected officials to any state or national horse racing board or horsemen organization are not eligible to participate.
  25. All copyright, trademark and other proprietary rights associated with the contest, become property of Churchill Downs Incorporated.
  26. TwinSpires reserves the right to change the contest schedule and rules without notice, or cancel the contest due to unforeseen events.
  27. Important Notice for NHC Tour members: you must notify us of your NHC Tour pin number no later than the 15th day of the first month you participate. Send an email with your full name, TwinSpires.com account number, and your NHC Tour number to rich.nilsen@brisnet.com.
  28. Each of the six Leaderboards will award points per the NHC Tour point structure, but only one NHC Tour Point allotment regardless of how many Leaderboards an individual member participates in during the year. A participant's best Leaderboard finish across all the Leaderboards will determine his or her NHC Tour points. A maximum of one Leaderboard score per member will be applied for NHC Tour points. The maximum number of NHC Tour Points awarded per the TwinSpires.com Leaderboard will be 3,500 per participant. For example, if NHC Tour member John Smith finishes 1st in the Place Points Leaderboard and 2nd in the Show ROI Leaderboard, he will only receive Tour points for his higher placing in the Place Points contest. *.
