Race 3 at Australia A (Goulburn) Wednesday night is a maiden for colts and geldings going seven furlongs. A field of 10 are entered and the ground is expected to be “Good.”
#1 REFIRE ran well last fall when finishing a close second in a 14-runner field going six furlongs at 31/1. He came back and missed by a length next out in a 13-runner field at the same distance at 7/2. Off for four months, he raced evenly after a poor start and is now stretching out to seven furlongs. Jason Collett picks up the mount (20% his last 50 rides) and Refire draws well. Second start off the layoff at a generous price is better than playing him next time out at a short price so the reward is there (12/1 morning line) for the risk.
#3 VERMONT won two barrier trials to begin the year and it was noticeable that Blake Shinn rode him both times. In his career debut last out, with Shinn aboard, he chased the pace to the final furlong before tiring going five furlongs in fast time at Wyong. In that race, the first two finishers were Godolphin runners from James Cummings who seems to be winning everything lately. He shows up in this spot with new rider Adam Hyeronimus and should be able to stretch out another quarter-mile. Legendary trainer Gai Waterhouse and her partner, Adrian Bott, excel with their youngsters. Against this level, Vermont is quite logical.
#5 TRIGGER did little in his career debut at Newcastle from post 11 going this distance. He came back to trial two weeks ago for James Cummings and Godolphin. Son of Medaglia d’Oro didn’t take much money in his debut so I would watch the board here to see if he is live.
Refire doesn’t face the strongest group and if he can handle the weight impost, he is very live at 12/1.
