An overflow field of 15 fillies and mares is signed on for the $100,000 Groupie Doll S. at Ellis Park on Sunday.
Groupie Doll Contenders
#1 LADY APPLE (4-1) — Asmussen trainee makes her local debut and draws the rail as a major player in the cast. Curlin filly is a multiple graded stakes queen who had a decent prep when an even third in the Obeah S. at Delaware last out. Brian Hernandez will guide the win threat.
#2 INTHEMIDSTOFBIZ (15-1) — Bay daughter of Fed Biz has won or placed in five straight in preparation for her stakes bow. 4-year-old stretches out beyond 6 furlongs for the initial time, and she could be an exotics contender with another move forward on Sunday.
#3 ISTAN COUNCIL (30-1) — Larry Jones trainee has failed to hit the board in four straight assignments, but she was a powerful 10-length winner in a lone try on the course last campaign. Longshot will need something resembling that effort to be a factor in the latter stages.
#4 SARA SEA (20-1) — Lukas trainee has some early speed, but she is just 2-for-18 lifetime and looks overmatched in this spot. Joe Talamo will guide the Tiznow filly.
#5 OFFSPRING (15-1) — Cajun-bred possesses good solid form against softer and takes a big class hike in her stakes bow. Into Mischief filly has never been better, but others look more appealing in a big field.
#6 WITH DIGNITY (8-1) — Dangerous Declaration of War filly had a productive 3-year-old season and will be live in her 2020 debut. Ian Wilkes trainee can win while fresh, and the well-bred filly is working in swift fashion as of late. Julien Leparoux will guide the late-running win threat.
#7 LADY KATE (5-1) — Kenneally charge led throughout in a solid allowance tally at Churchill Downs in her most recent offering. Bernardini lass shows a pair of bullets in her last trio of morning drills, and the 4-year-old will be in the hunt from the break with Geroux in the silks.
#8 NEW ROO (12-1) — Dominus chestnut ran the race of her life on the surface last time out when dominating allowance foes by 12 lengths. Drury pupil has never missed the board on dirt in her career, and she will be an obvious contender with something like her latest showing. Colby Hernandez retains the mount.
#9 DOS VINOS (6-1) — Talented Calhoun trainee goes a route of ground for the initial time following a game sprint victory at Keeneland. Twirling Candy filly is another with a top-three chance with a step in the right direction.
#10 DIVINE QUEEN (20-1) — Daughter of Divine Park was runner-up in the race in 2019, but she faces a taller task on this occasion. 5-year-old has gone unplaced in four straight and would be a surprise in the Groupie Doll.
#11 CLUB CAR (12-1) — Exotics contender made a big late run to be second in a recent Keeneland allowance for Colebrook. Consistent dark bay could appreciate the added ground to work with today with Lanerie in the stirrups.
#12 STREET BAND (3-1) — Horse to beat from the Jones barn closed from well back to be a good fourth in the deep Apple Blossom in her latest venture. 2019 Cotillion (G1) queen was victorious in her lone prior try at Ellis Park, and she will appreciate the class relief on Sunday. Regular pilot Sophie Doyle will be up.
#13 GRANDARIA (15-1) — First on the also-eligible list is twice stakes-placed but will have to overcome a wide post while facing her toughest field to date. Daughter of Curlin would be a surprise for Walsh.
#14 TIMELESS CURLS (15-1) — Stakes heroine was unplaced on the lawn while making her 2020 debut for Norm Casse. Chestnut has ability and room to improve second off the bench, but she will need a lifetime best to take this field down.
#15 RED DANE (30-1) — Outsider is 3-for-28 in her career, and she would break from the widest slot if she draws into the race. Red Rocks mare is hard to endorse.
