A field of 10 will go postward to contest the signature race of the Emerald Down meeting on Thursday, the $100,000 Longacres Mile (G3).

Longacres Mile Analysis

#2 Five Star General will flash speed from the gate on the stretch out, but he will have company from #4 Anothertiwstafate, #5 He’s the Reason, and #7 Papa’s Golden Boy early on. The pace will be swift.

Longacres Mile Contenders

#1 ELLIOT BAY (8-1) — Exotics contender is 2-for-2 this campaign and brings his best lifetime form to the race for Lucarelli. Harbor the Gold gelding was a distant fifth in the event in 2019, but faces an easier task in a field with less depth this season. Bay gets a cozy rail draw with Martinez in the controls.

#2 FIVE STAR GENERAL (9-2) — British Columbia Derby (G3) star has won 3-of-4 dating back to last year and could be up to a peak race in his third off the long break. Glen Todd pupil has a lot of back class, and the lightly raced colt shows a swift half-mile move on the surface in preparation of his local bow. Mario Gutierrez inherits the mount.

#3 THE PRESS (20-1) — Outsider from the Belvoir barn takes the huge jump from $20,000 claiming company to the graded stakes ranks. Washington-bred 7-year-old has endured good success on the oval in the past and was a winner most recently, but I prefer others much more.

#4 ANOTHERTWISTAFATE (8-5) — Stakes winner is the clear one to beat in his first appearance since the 2019 Preakness (G1) for trainer Blaine Wright. Dark bay son of Scat Daddy shows a long string of steady morning drills in anticipation of his 4-year-old debut, including a bullet 6-furlong move most recently. Kentucky-bred possesses very good tactical presence and will be the one to run down late beneath Juan Guitierrez.

#5 HE’S THE REASON (5-1) — Second from the Todd shedrow was a sprint second in his first 2020 outing leading up to the Longacres Mile. Multiple stakes hero has never run at Emerald Downs, but the gray son of The Factor is very consistent and could surely challenge for a placing with his best under Cruz.

#6 HOLLYWOOD HEAT (30-1) — Recent allowance winner earned a career-best Brisnet Speed figure last time out for Raudales. Dark bay colt makes his stakes debut in a tough spot, however, and he would be a surprise with Anaya in the silks.

#7 PAPA’S GOLDEN BOY (10-1) — Vince Gibson charge nearly led at every call in his black-type debut when second in the Mt. Rainier on the oval. Speedball has been much improved since the addition of blinkers three back and stretches out for the initial time on Thursday, but he will have to prove capable of beating this kind before I get in his corner.

#8 TAKE CHARGE DEPUTY (12-1) — Contender from the barn of Jose Rosales has come back with a pair of solid races on the course this campaign and gets a top-three chance with his best performance. Gelded 5-year-old has won or placed on three occasions at Emerald, and he also owns the right running style to rally into what could be a wicked early tempo. Figueroa has the assignment.

#9 MAKAH LANE (15-1) — Atta Boy Roy gelding is a stakes winner who owns something of an all-or-nothing profile for conditioner Bonnie Jenne. Lightly-raced 4-year-old has big early foot, though he rated and closed for a tally two back, and the outside draw could benefit the dark bay in the early stages with Samuels in the controls. Wildcard is dangerous on his best day.

#10 LA WAUN (20-1) — Former claimer has arguably never been better, but he is a question mark at the trip and drew the widest post of all in the cast, too. 5-year-old is not one I will be backing on Thursday.
