Grande Premio Brasil Race History
Inaugurated in 1933, the Grande Premio Brasil is the premier Thoroughbred race on the Brazilian racing calendar. Inaugurated in 1993, the race is currently held at the Hipódromo da Gávea in Rio de Janeiro and has been contested at 1 & 1/2 miles since 1972. Previously, the race was contested at 1 & 7/8ths of a mile.
The race regularly attracts some of the best racehorses Brazil has to offer. One of the more notable past winners is Bal a Bali, a back-to-back Brazilian National Champion Colt who captured their win in 2014. He was also the first three year old to win the race.
Starting in 2014, the race was moved from early August to June so that it could be included in the Breeder's Cup Challenge Series, gaining the winner an automatic berth in the Breeder's Cup Turf.
