The History of the Norfolk Stakes

The Norfolk Stakes is Group II flat horse race run each year at the Ascot Racecourse in Ascot, Berkshire, England. Inaugurated in 1843, the race was originally run as the New Stakes, but in 1973 its name was changed to honor Bernard Marmaduke Fitzalan-Howard, the 16th Duke of Norfolk, who served as Her Majesty's Representative at Ascot from 1945 to 1972. In 2018 the race was adding to the Breeders' Cup Challenge series, offering the winner an automatic bid to the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
