The History of the Prince of Wales's Stakes

Established in 1862, the Prince of Wales's Stakes is a Group I flat Thoroughbred horse race run each year at the Ascot Racecourse in Ascot, Berkshire, England. Named for King Edward VII, who at that time was still the Prince of Wales, the race was discontinued discontinued in 1940 as there was no Prince of Wales. 17 years later, the race was resumed with investiture of Prince Charles and has run annually ever since. As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, winners gain an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Turf.
