Harness Preview for 8/27/2014

August 27th, 2014

On a night when few tracks offer live racing, the Wednesday card at Harrington presents racegoers with a trio of decent wagering opportunities if they are willing to take a stand and look to beat an odds-on favorite in those races.

Wednesday's second race is a non-winner of five races or $25,001 lifetime condition for trotters, but the likely odds-on favorite in this event has already exceeded his conditions save for the simple fact that wins and earnings in the recent Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund series are not being counted against him.

I Like My Boss (Jonathan Roberts ) has been a picture of perfection throughout his young career, winning all nine of his starts this year and all 12 of his outings over the past two seasons. The Don Boss Vita gelding owned and trained by Robert Shahan captured the $100,000 DSBF final in his most recent outing on the lucrative Governor's Day card here on July 24, but the unbeaten trotter has been idle since.

I Like My Boss has also displayed more than a hint of versatility during his streak. On most occasions catch driver Jonathan Roberts has allowed the gelding to settle well off the pace and then launch a first over bid. But on Governor's Day, after narrowly avoiding a serious accident with a pacer warming up for a subsequent race in the post parade, I Like My Boss took no prisoners and went right to the top early and cruised home late as much the best.

This evening I Like My Boss is likely to employ a similar tactic, but railbound Abbi's Gabbi (Art Stafford, Jr.) is worth a play. In each of his last two starts against similar, Abbi's Gabbi has finished fourth and second as the 6-5 and 4-5 favorite, respectively, and finally draws inside. I Like My Boss is the best trotter in the group, but at 1-5 off a month layoff he is worth playing against tonight.

Several races later in a non-winners of $7001 last four event for trotters, give Cash On Delivery (Vince Copeland) an immediate chance to atone for his second-place finish as the 4-5 favorite in this group last week. A regular in the upper level conditions here and occasionally the Open, Cash On Delivery raced first over into a 57.1 back half last week and just missed. That race should prove to be an ideal tightener for the Copeland trainee.

Then in the finale, a non-winners of four event for pacers, look for Pronology Z Tam (George Dennis) to atone from his stunning setback as the 1-20 favorite last week. The four-year-old Western Terror gelding has delivered several sharp efforts locally and last week he settled for second as the very short priced horse. He should be able to dictate the tempo from the outset this evening and send his backers home happy.
