Tampa Bay Derby Betting

The Tampa Bay Derby in Florida has been contested at 1 1/16 miles every year since 1981. The race for 3-year-olds in mid-March at Tampa Bay Downs carries a $350,000 purse, and has been a Grade II race since 2011. The race is part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby Championship Series with a 50-20-10-5 points system awarded to the top-4 finishers.

The 2017 Tampa Bay Derby was won by the 6-5 favorite Tapwrit, the highly-acclaimed son of Tapit. He came from well off the pace on the backstretch and then zoomed home to win by more than 4 lengths while setting a new track record of 1:42.36. Tapwrit’s victory and 50 points secured a spot in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby, where he finished in 6th place. Tapwrit went on to win a Triple Crown race in the Belmont Stakes for top trainer Todd Pletcher.

Horses coming out of the other Kentucky Derby prep on the local track, the Sam F. Davis Stakes in February, are one’s to watch. Tapwrit finished 2nd in the Sam F. Davis at 9-1 odds. Destin stalked the leaders and won the 2016 Tampa Bay Derby in a then-record time after also winning the Sam F. Davis. Another son of Giant’s Causeway won the 2015 Tampa Bay Derby when Carpe Diem stalked and pounced to a 5-length victory as the even-money favorite. Carpe Diem was off a four month layoff having finished 2nd in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2014. But note that Todd Pletcher trained all three of those Tampa Bay Derby winners, so watch his horses in training and racing, as he’ll point to this race as a key one for his Kentucky Derby hopefuls.

Not all recent winners have race in stakes company prior to winning the Tampa Bay Derby. In 2014, Ring Weekend broke his maiden in his fifth start, and then came in from Gulfstream and won the Tampa Bay Derby wire-to-wire at 14-1 odds in his first race over the Tampa Bay Downs track.

In 2007, the Tampa Bay Derby started to gain more notoriety and betting interest, as Street Sense became the first Tampa Bay Derby participant to win the Kentucky Derby. He had won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2006 and then won the Tampa Bay Derby in his 2007 debut. In 2010, Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby after finishing third in the Tampa Bay Derby, further boosting the races reputation.

The Tampa Bay Derby is run on Tampa Bay Downs Festival Day, the biggest racing day at the track. Lots of betting opportunities leading into the Tampa Bay Derby.

Tampa Bay Derby Race History

The Tampa Bay Derby (G2) is run in mid-March at Tampa Bay Downs, and the 1 1/16 mile race has a purse of $350,000 and is a major prep for the Kentucky Derby. The winner receives 50 qualifying points and a spot in the starting gate to the Kentucky Derby, and the next three finishers in the race receive 20-10-5 points.

The Tampa Bay Derby was inaugurate in 1981, and over the past decade it has become a more popular race with inclusion on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

A number of jockey’s have won the race two times, and trainer Todd Pletcher has won the race a record five times.
In 2007, Street Sense became the first Tampa Bay Derby participant to win the Kentucky Derby. In 2010, Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby after finishing third in the Tampa Bay Derby.

But in the 2017 race, Tapwrit set the Tampa Bay Derby speed record with a winning time of 1:42.36. The even money favorite made it look like a gift, galloping past the pace setter State of Honor and running home to victory by more than four lengths. Tapwrit went on to win the Belmont Stakes, and the 2016 Tampa Bay Derby winner Destin finished 2nd in the Belmont by a nose. The 2015 winner had a short but strong career, as Carpe Diem was runner up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile before winning the Tampa Bay Derby, Blue Grass Stakes and retiring after the Kentucky Derby due to injury.
