The 141st edition of the Kentucky Derby proved to be a turning point in the history of the Triple Crown. American Pharoah began his quest for Triple Crown glory in the 1 1/4-mile event and kicked off an exciting 2015 season when scoring by a length on May 2 at Churchill Downs.
The bay son of Pioneerof the Nile proved a worthy winner as the near 3-1 favorite, chasing the early pace set by fellow Bob Baffert trainee Dortmund and taking over in the stretch. Jockey Victor Espinoza guided American Pharoah to an easy victory in a final time of 2:03.02, and thus the quest to become the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years began.
It was also the second straight Kentucky Derby win for Espinoza, who piloted California Chrome to win in 2014.
Firing Line followed American Pharoah home in second under the Twin Spires on the first Saturday in May, and himself was followed by Dortmund, who just held third by a neck over Frosted.
