$1,500,000 (G1) Belmont Stakes
American Pharoah, winner of the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby, is poised to make history on June 6th if he can win the $1,500,000 (G1) Belmont Stakes. If he can complete the elusive Triple Crown of horse racing, he would become the first horse since 1978 (Affirmed) to accomplish the feat. The Pharoah is expected to be an overwhelming betting favorite to win the 1 1/2 mile race, but a victory is certainly not a foregone conclusion, as 12 horses have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown and failed in the Belmont since Affirmed.
Rivals Firing Line and Dortmund will sit this race out, but the competition is expected to be quite stiff. Among the field will be Todd Pletcher trained Materiality and Carpe Diem, as well as Kiaran McLaughlin trained Frosted, who closed like a freight train down the stretch in the Kentucky Derby on May 2nd.
