History of the Darley Alcibiades Stakes

The Darley Alcibiades Stakes was first run at Keeneland in 1952 and named in honor of Alcibiades, a foundation mare owned by track founder Hal Price Headley. Originally contested at seven furlongs, the race was slightly lengthened to just under a mile in 1956 before settling at its current distance of 1 1⁄16 miles in 1981—establishing it as the first true route test for two-year-old fillies on the fall calendar.

The race earned graded status in 1973, was elevated to Grade 2 in 1976, and achieved its current Grade 1 ranking in 2007. Its surface history has mirrored Keeneland’s own evolution—from dirt to Polytrack in 2006 and back to a newly engineered dirt surface in 2014. Since 2003, sponsorship by Darley has further elevated its prestige, aligning the race with some of the sport’s most influential breeding and racing operations.

Over the decades, the Alcibiades has produced many of North America’s brightest young stars, serving as a major stepping-stone to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
