The History of the E. P. Taylor Stakes

Inaugurated in 1956, the E. P. Taylor Stakes is a Grade 1 race run each year at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Initally run as the Nettie Handicap, in 1981 the race was renamed to honor Edward Plunket Taylor, who presided as President of the Ontario Jockey Club between 1953 and 1973. Taylor also founded the Jockey Club of Canada, and owned the incredibly successful Windfields Farm. 

Over the years the race has been run at several distances:

• 1956–1961 – 1 1⁄16 miles on dirt
• 1962–1963 – 1 1⁄16 miles on dirt
• 1964–1967 – 1 1⁄8 miles on dirt
• 1968 to date – 1 1⁄4 miles on turf

The race was seen as a potential final stepping stone for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf until 2025 when the race was officially added to the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, allowing winners to automatically qualify for the Filly & Mare Turf.
