History of the Fleur de Lis Stakes
The Fleur de Lis Handicap is a Grade II Thoroughbred horse race run each summer at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. First inaugurated in 1975, the race has become a fixture for top fillies and mares ages four and older who excel at middle distances on dirt. Over the decades, it has drawn some of the sport’s biggest stars, with notable winners including Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra (2010), three-time champion Royal Delta (2013), and Midnight Bisou (2020), who used the victory as a stepping stone toward Eclipse Award honors.
The name “Fleur de Lis” comes from the stylized lily that has long symbolized French royalty and remains an emblem of Louisville’s French heritage — the city itself was named after King Louis XVI of France. Traditionally run at a distance of 1 1/8 miles, the Fleur de Lis Stakes offers a substantial purse and plays a key role in the summer racing calendar for older female horses. As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, the race grants its winner an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, adding even more significance for owners and trainers aiming for year-end championship glory. Over time, the Fleur de Lis has earned a reputation for showcasing resilient, talented mares and providing memorable moments in the summer racing action.
