Haskell Stakes Race History

Inaugurated in 1968 and renamed in 1981 to honor Amory L. Haskell, the former president and chairman who helped establish Monmouth Park, the Haskell Stakes is now a Grade I race contested each July at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, New Jersey, over 1⅛ miles for three-year-olds. Boasting a $1  million purse (with rare exceptions), the Haskell holds a prestigious “Win and You’re In” spot for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Legendary figures mark its legacy: Hall of Famer Holy Bull (1994), Point Given (2001), Rachel Alexandra (2009), Triple Crown champion American Pharoah (2015), Authentic (2020), Mandaloun (2021), and Dornoch (2024), all claimed victory and earned year-end honors in their division.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert holds the record for most wins with nine, three of which came in succession between 2010 and 2012. Mike E. Smith leads jockeys with four victories. Smith's last win came in 2023 upon Geaux Rocket Ride, who was making his Grade I stakes debut. A few months later, he would miss out on a win at the Pacific Classic Stakes  by a neck racing 1 1/4 miles (same distance as the Breeders' Cup Classic) for the first time ever. Sadly, we would never get to see Geaux Rocket Ride in the Breeders' Cup after sustaining a condylar fracture during a practice run at Santa Anita Park that led to his euthanization in November of 2023.

Track legends are etched in its records—Verrazano’s 9¾‑length romp in 2013 stands as the widest margin of victory, while in 2022 Cyberknife scorched the track in 1:46.24, shattering both the stakes and Monmouth Park nine-furlong record.

Since transforming to allowance weight conditions in 2006 and maintaining its million-dollar purse from 1997 (aside from small dips in 2002 and 2019), the Haskell has grown into the premier event of the Jersey Shore summer meet. It's a mid-season showdown that bridges the Triple Crown trail to the Breeders’ Cup.
