International Stakes Race History

First run in 1972, the Juddmonte International Stakes is a Group 1 flat race contested each August at York Racecourse in York, England. Open to horses three years old and older, the race is run over 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 56 yards, or approximately 2,063 meters, and has developed into one of the premier middle-distance races on the European calendar.

The race was conceived by Major Leslie Petch, then York's Clerk of the Course, although poor health forced him to retire before the inaugural running. That first edition produced one of the most memorable moments in the race's history. Epsom Derby winner Roberto scored a decisive upset over the previously unbeaten Brigadier Gerard, handing the legendary champion the only defeat of his 18-race career. Roberto had captured the Derby earlier that summer by a short head over Rheingold, rather than a nose.

The International's roll of honor has grown to include many of Europe's greatest racehorses, including Troy, Giant's Causeway, Sea the Stars, Frankel, Australia, Baaeed and City of Troy. Frankel delivered perhaps the race's most celebrated performance in 2012, extending his unbeaten record while successfully stretching beyond a mile for the first time. More recently, City of Troy established a course record of 2:04.32 in his 2024 victory.

Aidan O'Brien became the race's all-time leading trainer when City of Troy supplied his seventh victory in 2024, breaking his tie with Sir Michael Stoute. O'Brien's previous winners were Giant's Causeway (2000), Duke of Marmalade (2008), Rip Van Winkle (2010), Declaration of War (2013), Australia (2014) and Japan (2019). Frankie Dettori holds the jockey record with six victories, taking sole possession of the mark when he guided Mostahdaf to victory in 2023.

As part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series, the winner of the Juddmonte International Stakes earns an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
