History of the Jessamine Stakes

The Jessamine Stakes was first run in 1991 at Keeneland under the name Green River Stakes, created as a turf test for two-year-old fillies over a mile and one-sixteenth. In 2003, the race was renamed the Jessamine County Stakes to honor the nearby Kentucky county, and by 2005 it became known simply as the Jessamine Stakes. Over the years, it has steadily grown in prestige, attracting some of the most promising young turf fillies in North America.

The race earned graded status in 2011 and was elevated to Grade II in 2018, reflecting its consistently strong fields and increasing importance on the national stage. As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series, the Jessamine provides the winner with an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf — making it one of the final key prep races before championship weekend.

Throughout its history, the Jessamine has produced several future stars and memorable performances. The course record belongs to Aunt Pearl, who blazed to victory in 2020 in 1:40.86. Legendary jockey Pat Day holds the record for most wins with five, while standout trainers such as Kenneth McPeek and Todd Pletcher have frequently found success in the event.
