Juvenile Stakes History
The Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown, originally known as the Golden Fleece Stakes, was inaugurated in 2007 to honor the famed Irish-trained colt who won The Derby in 1982. In its early years, the race was contested over seven furlongs in late June or early July and held Listed status. It quickly established itself as a proving ground for Ireland’s most promising two-year-olds.
A major shift came in 2012, when the race was moved to September and extended to a full mile, aligning it with the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf as a key European trial. At that time it became known as the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Trial Stakes. The following year the race was elevated to Group 3 status, before being renamed the Juvenile Turf Stakes in 2014 and incorporated into the prestigious Irish Champions Weekend festival. A year later the word “Turf” was dropped, leaving it simply the Juvenile Stakes.
Since then, the race has grown steadily in stature, eventually reaching Group 2 level. It has become a fixture for spotting emerging stars destined for international stages, with many winners advancing to glory in major European and North American races. Few trainers have dominated the Juvenile Stakes like Aidan O’Brien, whose runners have claimed the title time and again, underscoring the race’s role as a showcase for Ballydoyle’s future champions.
