Kentucky Turf Sprint Stakes Race History

The Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint Stakes is a premier Grade II thoroughbred race held annually at Kentucky Downs in Franklin, Kentucky. Traditionally run in September, this six-furlong turf sprint has become a significant event for older horses, offering a purse of $2 million, which includes $1 million from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund. The race is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series, granting the winner an automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, underscoring its importance in the sprinting division.

Inaugurated in 1998 as the Kentucky Cup Turf Dash Stakes, the race was renamed in 2016 to its current title. It achieved Grade III status in 2017 and was elevated to Grade II in 2020. The event has seen notable performances, including a track record set in 2022 by Bran who completed the distance in 1:07.41. Other records include a six-length margin of victory by Morluc in 2000. Two horses have secured two victories each - Hold the Salt (2007, 2008) and Gear Jockey (2021, 2023) - and thus share the record for most wins, highlighting the race's competitive nature and its role in shaping the careers of top turf sprinters.
