Miss Grillo Stakes Race History
The Miss Grillo Stakes is a Grade II horse race run each year at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY. Inaugurated in 1980 at Aqueduct, the race is named for the Argentine-bred filly Miss Grillo, who claimed back to back victories at the Diana Handicap in 1946 & 1947. Over the years the race has bounced between Belmont Park and Aqueduct several times, most recently in 2022 when the race was moved temporarily to allow Belmont Park to redevelopment work to begin.
Some of the notable former winners of the Miss Grillo Stakes include:
- Lady Eli (2014) - 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner & 2017 American Champion Female Turf Horse
- Maram (2008) - 2008 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner
- Wait A While (2005) - American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly
Currently, two jockeys share the record for most wins with three: Jose Lezcano (2008, 2010, 2013) and Javier Castellano (2012, 2016, 2019). Trainer Chad C. Brown has been dominant at the race, holding a record nine wins of his own (2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023).
The race serves as a qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf as part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series.
