History of the Natalma Stakes
The Natalma Stakes was inaugurated in 1965 at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto as a race for two-year-old fillies. Originally run on dirt at a mile and a sixteenth, the race was moved to turf in 1968 and later shortened to its current distance of one mile in 1980. These adjustments helped establish the race as a premier early test for young turf fillies.
Over the decades, the Natalma has steadily risen in stature. Long contested as a Grade III race, it was promoted to Grade II in 2012 and reached Grade I status in 2016, reflecting its reputation as a proving ground for international talent. The purse has also grown significantly, underscoring the importance of the event within North American racing.
The race is named in honor of Natalma, the dam of Northern Dancer, whose legacy looms large in Canadian and international breeding. Today, the Natalma Stakes offers automatic entry to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and has consistently served as a launchpad for future champions, making it one of Woodbine’s most prestigious and historically significant races.
