Pat O'Brien Stakes Race History

The Pat O’Brien Stakes is a Grade II Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. Named after the famed actor and racehorse owner Pat O'Brien, the race is contested over seven furlongs on dirt and is open to horses three years old and up. First inaugurated in 1980, the race has become a key feature of the summer meet at Del Mar, often attracting top sprinters and milers. With a $250,000 purse, the event also serves as a "Win and You’re In" qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, making it an important stepping stone toward championship-level competition.

Over the years, the Pat O’Brien Stakes has seen some standout performances and record-setting runs. The stakes record at the current seven-furlong distance is 1:20.06, set by Lit de Justice in 1995—a time that remains one of the fastest recorded at Del Mar. Legendary trainer Bob Baffert holds the record for most wins by a trainer, with seven victories as of 2025, while Garrett Gomez leads all jockeys with five wins. Notable winners include Goldencents (2014), who went on to win the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, and Catalina Cruiser, who won back-to-back editions in 2018 and 2019. The race has been run on both synthetic and dirt surfaces, but has been held on dirt since 2015.
