Personal Ensign Stakes Race History

The Personal Ensign Stakes is a prestigious Grade 1 Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Saratoga Race Course in New York. Open to fillies and mares aged four years and older, this race covers a distance of 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs) on dirt and typically takes place in late August, making it a key event in the Saratoga racing meet. Named after the legendary mare Personal Ensign, who retired undefeated in 1988 with 13 wins, the race honors her remarkable legacy and serves as an important prep for the Breeders' Cup Distaff. With a purse sometimes exceeding $500,000, the Personal Ensign Stakes attracts some of the nation’s top female racehorses, showcasing their speed and stamina on one of the sport’s most historic tracks.

The Personal Ensign Stakes has produced a number of notable records over its long history. At the race’s current distance of 1 1/8 miles, Abel Tasman owns the speed record with her 1:47.19 performance in 2018. Three horses share the record for most victories with two apiece: Politely (1967–68), Lie Low (1974–75) and Beautiful Pleasure (1999–2000). Hall of Fame jockey Ángel Cordero Jr. stands well above the rest among riders with eight victories between 1968 and 1989. The training record is shared by MacKenzie Miller and C. R. “Shug” McGaughey III with four wins each, while Rokeby Stable and Ogden Phipps share the ownership record with three victories apiece.
