History of the Santa Anita Sprint Championship
The Santa Anita Sprint Championship traces its roots back to the Ancient Title Stakes, a race inaugurated in 1983 at Hollywood Park and named in honor of the great California-bred sprinter Ancient Title. Initially run as an overnight event for three-year-olds, the race evolved significantly: in 1985 it was moved to the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita and redesigned as a six‐furlong sprint open to older horses. Over time it assumed increasing prestige, being elevated to Grade III in 1990, Grade II in 1999, and reaching Grade I status in the early 2000s.
In 2012 the event’s name was changed to the Santa Anita Sprint Championship to better reflect its position as one of the West Coast’s premier sprint stakes and its role in the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series, offering the winner an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Through its modern history, it has featured top sprinters, including multiple winners like Roy H (2017, 2018) and Dr. Schivel (2021, 2023). The speed standard was reset in 2008 when Cost of Freedom clocked a dazzling 1:07.53 at six furlongs. In recent years, the race has seen shifts in grade—remaining a high-quality event and a key fall target for elite sprinters at Santa Anita.
