Shoemaker Mile Stakes Race History
First run in 1938 at Hollywood Park as the Premiere Handicap, the Shoemaker Mile is a Grade I race run each year at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA. The race has been contested at various distances, but since 1988 the race has been contested at 1 mile on turf (except in 1992 when the race was not held.)
In 1990, the race was named in honor of Bill Shoemaker, one of horse racings winningest jockeys and Hall of Fame inductee. Shoemaker won eleven Triple Crown races across four different decades and notched 8,833 wins in his storied career, with his first coming in 1949 and his last coming in 1990. A couple weeks after earning his final win, Shoemaker raced in his final race at Santa Anita, finishing forth in front of a record setting crowd. Shoemaker is one of prominent jockeys honored with a bust in Santa Anita’s Paddock Gardens, along with John Longden, Laffit Pincay, Jr., and Chris McCarron.
As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, the winner of the race gains an automatic bid to race in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
