Spinaway Stakes Race History

The Spinaway Stakes is a historic Grade I Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Open exclusively to two-year-old fillies, this seven-furlong sprint on dirt was inaugurated in 1881 and has evolved through various distances—from five furlongs in its earliest years to six furlongs through 1993, before settling at its current length of seven furlongs in 1994. The race remains a highlight of Saratoga’s late summer season and plays an important role in the Breeders' Cup Challenge as a "Win and You're In" prep for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Over the years, the Spinaway Stakes has delivered impressive performances and set standout records. The fastest recorded time at the current seven-furlong distance is 1:22.28, clocked by Hot Dixie Chick in 2009. At the previous six-furlong distance, the legendary Ruffian still holds the fastest mark at 1:08.60, set in 1974. Among jockeys, Ángel Cordero Jr. leads with five wins (1977, 1980, 1984, 1987, and 1989), while trainer Todd A. Pletcher has also dominated with a record of seven victories (1999, 2003, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2016, and 2025).
