History of the Spinster Stakes
The Spinster Stakes was first run in 1956 at Keeneland as a race for fillies and mares aged three and up. Over time it grew in prominence, eventually becoming a fixture of Keeneland’s fall meeting and a key part of the national racing calendar. It has long been contested over 1 1⁄8 miles on dirt, offering a graded test that rewards stamina, class, and timing.
In 2005, the race became sponsored by Juddmonte Farms and has since often been styled as the Juddmonte Spinster. It was part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series for some years, offering the winner a “Win and You’re In” spot to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. The surface has also seen evolution: in 2006 Keeneland installed a synthetic, Polytrack surface, but later returned to dirt (in 2014) as part of broader trends in track surfaces.
Through its history, the Spinster has produced some of the nation’s most esteemed fillies and mares, and many winners have gone on to contend at the highest levels. Legendary names and standout runners have made their mark in this race, making it a cornerstone of fall racing at Keeneland for fillies and mares.
