Sussex Stakes Race History
The Sussex Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race run each year at the Goodwood Racecourse in West Sussex, England. First run in 1841 at 6 furlongs, the race was not run consistently for almost 40 years. In fact, on 25 occasions the race was run uncontested.
In 1878, the Sussex Stakes underwent some adjustments - the distance was increased to 1 mile and opened up to three year olds. Since then, the race has grown to become the most prestigious race run at Goodwood. Sir Gordon Richard, considered by some to be the world's greatest jockey, has held the record for most wins (8) since 1952.
As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, the winner gains automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Mile.
