Woodbine Mile Race History

The Woodbine Mile was inaugurated in 1988 as the Molson Export Challenge, offering a then-impressive $750,000 purse and restricted to three-year-olds on the dirt. In its early years the distance shifted slightly, but the most significant transformation came in 1997, when the race was moved to turf, standardized at one mile, and opened to older horses. This change temporarily cost the race its graded status, but it quickly regained prestige as it established itself as a top international turf event.

Over the decades, the race has undergone several name changes tied to its sponsors, including the Molson Export Million and the Atto Mile, before ultimately becoming known as the Woodbine Mile under the branding of more recent partners. Its reputation has only grown, thanks in part to unforgettable performances from champions who used the race as a springboard to further glory. Wise Dan’s back-to-back victories in 2012 and 2013, capped by a blazing time record of 1:31.75 that still stands, remain among the race’s defining moments. The only other horse to capture consecutive victories did so just recently, with Notable Speech winning in 2025 and 2026. Other celebrated winners such as Ventura, Tepin, World Approval, Leroidesanimaux, Soaring Free, and Modern Games have further solidified the Woodbine Mile’s role as one of North America’s premier turf tests and a crucial stepping-stone to Breeders’ Cup success. In fact, as part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, the winners automatically qualify for the Breeders' Cup Mile.
