Zenyatta Stakes Race History

The Zenyatta Stakes has its roots not under its current name, but as the Lady’s Secret Handicap, a race first run in 1993. Its inaugural edition at Santa Anita was won by Hollywood Wildcat, and over the years the race steadily built prestige among races for older fillies and mares. In 1996 it was elevated to Grade II status, and it even reached Grade I in 2007, reflecting its growing importance on the calendar.

In the late 2000s, a transformation befitting its star honoree took place. Zenyatta, the mare for whom the race would be renamed, claimed three consecutive victories (2008, 2009, 2010), prompting the race’s rechristening in 2012 (with some transitional years where it still ran under the Lady’s Secret name). Zenyatta’s electric style and racing legacy helped cement the event’s identity. Over time, other elite mares followed in her footsteps: Beholder matched her three-win record, while venerable names such as Sharp Cat, Azeri, Tough Tiz’s Sis, and Paradise Woods have all graced the winner’s circle.

As part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” series, the Zenyatta Stakes offers its winner automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and thus serves as a key late-season prep for championship ambitions. Though its grade was downgraded back to Grade II in 2019, the race continues to attract top regional and national talent, standing as a marquee test at 1 1⁄16 miles for fillies and mares age three and up over Santa Anita’s dirt track.
