About the Cox Plate Carnival
This year the Sportingbet Cox Plate Carnival is bigger than ever. With the carnival spread over 5 days with 5 key events, 18 races and over $6million in prize money, 2013 will be a year to remember.
Thursday night is one of the ‘night of nights’ for racing under lights at the Valley. The $1 million Group 1 Sportingbet Manikato Stakes will be the highlight of a great night of racing and entertainment that only Moonee Valley can deliver. The next day is of course all about Australasia’s greatest Weight-For-Age Championship, the $3 million Group 1 Sportingbet Cox Plate - The Race Where Legends Are Made.
Following Moonee Valley’s successful two-day Sportingbet Cox Plate Carnival in 2012, with 40,000 patrons, and 17 races within 24 hours, the 2013 carnival will be even bigger.
The Group 1 $3M Sportingbet Cox Plate is regarded as the Australasian Weight- For-Age Championship and one of the great days of racing, not only in Australia but also around the world.
We were very fortunate last year to witness the New Zealand bred Ocean Park win his fourth consecutive Group 1 and defeat three-year-old champions All Too Hard and Pierro. With a strong support card of black type races including the Group 2 MV Vase, the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup, the Group 2 Crystal Mile, the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes and the Group 3 Tesio Stakes, it’s a day that can’t escape true racing history.
Cox Plate History
In honour of the founder of Moonee Valley, William Samuel Cox, the Moonee Valley Racing Club Committee decided to run a weight for age race over 2040m.
Offering a purse of 1000 Pounds, the W.S. Cox Plate was first run in 1922 and was won by imported stallion Violencello.
He was a seven-year-old who the previous year had won the Caulfield Cup at only his fifth start in Australia after being brought out from England.
Strategically placed on the racing calendar between the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, the Cox Plate has become a race of great importance and prestige. It is regarded as the best weight for age race in Australasia and one of the most exciting race days in the world.
Since its introduction in 1922, the Cox Plate has always attracted a field of the best horses on offer.
The who's who of the Australasian turf have won this race. Phar Lap, Kingston Town, Rising Fast, Dulcify, Gunsynd, Super Impose, Octagonal, Might and Power, Sunline, Northerly and more recently champion mare Makybe Diva, and So You Think, have all etched their names on the W.S. Cox Plate Wall of Champions that now takes pride of place in the Octagonal Lounge.
Today the Cox Plate carries total prize money of $3,050,000. It is the third richest race in Australia behind the Melbourne Cup.
The Cox Plate has provided racegoers with many great turf memories and will continue to for many more years to come.
