Gold Cup Information

The Dubai Gold Cup was first run in 2012 as part of the Dubai World Cup night. It became a Group 2 race in 2014, the year that Meydan Race Course converted its main track to dirt. The Dubai Gold Cup is a 3,200 meter (2 mile) turf race that takes place annually in late March and offers a $1 million purse. The marathon race draws many of the top distance turf runners in the world, and the 2015 winner Brown Panther set the race time record of 3:18.84.

The quality of the race and contenders for the Dubai Gold Cup has improved annually since its debut. Runners fitting the recent paradigm of high-class European shippers making their seasonal reappearance are worth noting for this tough turf test against high-class horses. All but one of the first six winners of the Dubai Gold Cup were at least 5-year-olds
In evaluating contenders for the Dubai Gold Cup, four of the six winners have prepped during the Dubai World Cup Carnival series. One race worthy watching is the Nad Al Sheba Trophy race on ‘Super Saturday’ in early March. The 2017 Dubai Gold Cup winner Vazirabad (FR) finished 2nd in the Nad Al Sheba Trophy behind the fine mare Beautiful Romance, who then finished 2nd behind Vazirabad in the Gold Cup. Sheikhzayedroad finished 3rd in both those races.

Also take note of the Dubai City of Gold 1 ½ mile turf race during the Carnival Series on ‘Super Saturday’.

Also, the Melbourne Cup in Australia, also contested at 3,200 meters in November, is another race to watch for potential contenders for the Dubai Gold Cup. The British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot in October is another 2 mile turf test that brings runners from that race to the Dubai Gold Cup. That includes the 2017 Gold Cup favorite Quest for More, who finished a disappointing 9th without a race between those to distance races.
