Al Quoz Sprint Information

The Al Quoz Sprint was first run in 2007 as part of the then, Dubai International Racing Carnival. The race was moved to Dubai World Cup night in 2010 to coincide with the opening of Meydan Racecourse. In 2009, it became a Group 3 and is now run at Group 1 level on the turf.

The Al Quoz Sprint is for 3-year-olds and up and carries a purse of $1 million and the winner receives $600,000. In 2011, the race was shortened to a 1,000 meter (5 furlongs) sprint. In 2017, the race reverted to 1,200 meters (6 furlongs) and The Right Man triumphed in a race record 1:09.59.

Weight restrictions for the Al Quoz Sprint:

  • Northern Hemisphere-bred 3-year-olds – 55.5 kg (122 lbs)
  • Southern Hemisphere-bred 3-year-olds – 58.5 kg (129 lbs)
  • NH & SH-bred 4-year-olds & up – 59.5 kg (131 lbs)

There are two races to focus on leading up to the Al Quoz Sprint. The Meydan Sprint is a 1,000 meter (5 furlongs) turf race on Feb. 22. Review that race and results, and know that the winner and a few other horses will run in the Al Quoz Sprint. The 2018 running of the Meydan Sprint saw 7-year-old gelding Ertijaal defeat 4-year-old Blue Point by a head. Blue Point was racing over the Meydan course for the first time, but he’ll have more value and upside for the rematch in the Al Quoz Sprint. Blue Point’s preferred distance is longer, so the 6 furlong Al Quoz Sprint not only benefits him more, but he was gamely gaining on Ertijaal in the final 100 yards of the Meydan Sprint. Blue Point has also finished 1st or 2nd in eight of his last 11 races and in the money 10 times. He won his previous race Bengough Stakes (G3) at Ascot in October going 6 ½ furlongs.

The Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint is a 1,200 meter (6 furlongs) race on March 10, 2018 and some of those runners will also race back in the Al Quoz Sprint three weeks later. The top-3 finishers in the 2017 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint all came back to run in the Al Quoz Sprint, and the winner Jungle Cat finished 4th in the Al Quoz Sprint, while 3rd place finisher The Right Man can back to win the Al Quoz Sprint in record time.
