Godolphin Mile Information
Inaugurated in 1994 and renamed in 2000, the Godolphin Mile is a Group 2 Thoroughbred race held at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, UAE. The race is contested at 1,600 metres (approx.. 8 furlongs) and includes 3-year-olds from the Southern Hemisphere and 4-year-olds from the Northern Hemisphere. The race takes place annually in late March during the Dubai World Cup night and offers a purse of $1 million (US).
Meydan opened in 2010 with a Tapeta synthetic surface along with a separate turf track. It replaced the synthetic surface with a dirt track in 2014, and the two fastest times over that track in the Godolphin Mile were recorded win 2016 and 2017. One Man Band won in 2016 (1:35.21), and in 2017 over a cool and wet surface, Second Summer (1:35.82) was a surprise winner. Both those colts were trained by Doug Watson, who had never won a race on Dubai World Cup night until 2016.
Second Summer will return to defend his Godolphin Mile title in 2018. He raced just twice since his 2017 victory, and has not placed in either race with a best finish 5th in the Feb. 8 Al Maktoum Challenge (G2) at Meydan. Since March 2016, Second Summer has won both his races contested at 1 mile, but he’ll be a relative long shot again to repeat as champion in the 2018 Godolphin Mile.
More than a month before the 2018 Godolphin Mile, the race is shaping up with some strong entries of probables that include:
Last year’s Godolphin Mile favorite North America, Sharp Azteca, Thunder Snow, Classic Emperor, Heavy Metal, Boynton, Kimbear, Lancaster Bomber, Ross, Layl and Frankyfourfingers.
Thunder Snow will be the favorite in the 2018 Godolphin Mile after an impressive win in the Feb. 8, 2018 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 (G2), a 1900 metre (1 3/16 mile) race. He took over in the stretch of pacesetters and 2nd and 3rd place finishers North American and Heavy Metal, the second betting choice.
Heavy Metal was a gate-to-wire winner in the Jan. 11, 2018 Al Makoum Challenge Round 1 (G2) race contested at 1 mile. Thunder Snow finished 2nd that day followed by North America in third. Those three will be the top contenders again in the Godolphin Mile on March 31.
