The Florida Derby is the main Kentucky Derby prep race at Gulfstream Park in South Florida. Held at 1 1/8 miles, the prestigious event takes place at the end of March or early April, five weeks before the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May.

Since 2000, four Florida Derby winners -- Orb (2013), Big Brown (2008), Barbaro (2006) and Monarchos (2001) – have gone on to capture the Kentucky Derby.

As one of the final round of major Kentucky Derby prep races, the Florida Derby is worth a total of 170 points in the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” series, with the top finishers receiving 100-40-20-10 points, respectively.

The Florida Derby highlights of a four-race series that begins with the one-mile Mucho Macho Man at the start of the year. The Holy Bull is typically offered in late January and the Fountain of Youth follows a month later, both at 1 1/16 miles.
