UNION RAGS RETURNS IN FLORIDA DERBY

Union Rags, arguably the leading Kentucky Derby prospect at this time, leads a smart field postward in the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. Trained by Michael Matz, the ultra-talented son of Dixie Union couldn’t have looked much better in a sterling tally in the Fountain of Youth (G2) most recently, and has reportedly trained well since. 

Risen Star (G2) hero El Padrino has looked the part in a pair of fine runs in 2012, and looms large in this spot for conditioner Todd Pletcher. The high-quality son of Pulpit showed his tenacity at Fair Grounds most recently and should improve off of that run. News Pending was a smart second in the Fountain of Youth and looks like an improving sort for trainer Dale Romans. The son of Harlan’s Holiday should appreciate the extra ground to work with in this spot. Sharp allowance second Take Charge Indy, Sam Davis (G3) third Reveron, multiple stakes winner Fort Loudon and Fountain of Youth fourth Neck ‘N Neck are also signed on for this lucrative event.
