Glorious Goodwood 2013 Highlights

Goodwood is generally regarded as being among the most spectacularly beautiful of Britain’s courses and its five-day ‘Glorious’ meeting, which starts on the final Tuesday of July in 2013, invariably attracts huge, fashionable crowds. Events on the opening afternoon of this superb fixture include the £150,000 Group 2 1400m bet365 Lennox Stakes, the £50,000 Group 3 1000m Molecomb Stakes, and a £75,000 2800m handicap.

Day Two’s card at Glorious Goodwood features three Pattern events. The most important is the £300,000 Group 1 1600m Qipco Sussex Stakes, a British Champions Series race won in both 2011 and 2012 by the brilliant Sir Henry Cecil-trained Frankel.  The Sussex Stakes is already shaping up to be a thrilling contest this year with the likes of Toronado and Dawn Approach in line for a run. The pair of them had a titanic battle at Royal ascot and we can look forward to more of the same at Goodwood during the Glorious meeting.  The other two are the £75,000 Group 2 1400m Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes, for two-year-olds; and the £75,000 Group 3 2400m Neptune Investment Management Gordon Stakes, a recognised Ladbrokes St Leger trial.

Thursday is day three and the seven-event card includes the £100,000 Group 2 3200m Artemis Goodwood Cup, part of the QIPCO British Champions Series; the £75,000 Group 2 1200m Audi Richmond Stakes; the £60,000 Group 3 2800m Blackrock Fillies’ Stakes and three competitive handicaps.

Four Pattern races feature on the Friday schedule at Glorious Goodwood. They are the £100,000 Group 2 1000m Betfred King George Stakes, the £60,000 Group 3 2400m Coutts Glorious Stakes, the £60,000 Group 3 1600m Thoroughbred Stakes and the £60,000 Group 3 1400m Betfred Oak Tree Stakes. The most valuable contest on another excellent seven-event card, however, is the £130,000 Betfred Mile, a 1600m heritage handicap.

For the general racing public, the undisputed highlight of the concluding Saturday of Glorious Goodwood is the Stewards’ Cup, a £100,000 1200m heritage handicap. It is not the richest in the seven-contest programme, though, as the Group 1 2000m Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes, won in recent seasons by superstar fillies and mares such as Russian Rhythm, Ouija Board, Peeping Fawn and Midday, offers prize money of £200,000.
