Horse > Inside Information
Inside Information was foaled in Kentucky in 1991, and was owned by Ogden Mills Phipps. She won her initial maiden start and raced just two times as a 2-year-old. Her sophomore season for trainer ‘Shug’ McGaughey was a significant one, winning six of seven starts including a pair of Grade 1 races in the Ashland and Acorn Stakes.
Inside Information continued her winning ways at age 4, winning seven of eight starts. Her lone loss was when she stumbled badly at the start of the Grade 1 Ballerina, coming from last to finish second. She closed her career with three-straight Grade 1 wins including her final race, the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in 1995 at Belmont Park.
On a muddy track at Belmont, that race would go down as one of the most dominant performances in the Breeders’ Cup. Inside Information broke from the inside with Mike Smith aboard, and did not challenge the early pacesetters. When she responded on the turn, it was like a powerful engine with acceleration. Inside Information destroyed a field of 10 as the 4-5 favorite, splashing open a 7 length lead in the stretch before winning by more than 13 lengths – a Breeders’ Cup record.
Inside Information finished her career as a champion, and won 14 of 17 starts while finishing in the money in all 17 races. She received the highest honor in 2008, induction into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
The Inside Information Stakes is a Grade II race run annually in March at Gulfstream Park.
