Jewel Princess
Jewel Princess was foaled in 1992 in Florida. As a 2-year-old, she raced three times and won twice. During her sophomore season, she won four times and captured her first graded stakes win in the San Clemente Handicap (G3) at Del Mar. Near the end of the year, she won the Linda Vista Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3) at Santa Anita.
But it was as a 4-year-old that Jewel Princess made more headlines. Trainer Wally Dollase mapped out an ambitious schedule of eight grades stakes races leading up to the Breeders’ Cup at Woodbine. She never finished out of the money, winning five times and beating champion Serena’s Song three times. Jewel Princess won her first two Grade II races to start the year, and then in her first time racing at Churchill Downs, she captured the Louisville Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2). Three straight races at Hollywood Park produced a pair of runner-up finishes and a victory in the Vanity Invitational, her first Grade 1 triumph.
Here ninth race that year was the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Woodbine. She defeated six rivals to secure an Eclipse Award as Champion Older Female Horse. Jockey Corey Nakatan took over the reins in mid-season and put on a picture perfect ride in the Breeders’ Cup, saving ground along the inside and asking Jewel Princess for her best effort rounding the final turn. She stormed past the tiring pacesetter Top Secret and caught Serena’s Song in the final furlong to win her biggest race.
At age 5, Jewel Princess won a pair of Grade 1 races to start the year again, the Santa Maria and Santa Margarita Invitational. She would race five more times and finish in the money four times that year, with an 8th place finish in the 1997 Breeders’ Cup Distaff her final race.
