History of the Bourbonette Oaks

The Bourbonette Oaks is a stakes race for three year old fillies held each spring at Turfway Park. First run in 1983, the race has long served as a showcase for promising young fillies competing during the Turfway Park winter and early spring meet. Over the years it has attracted a mix of developing runners and established barns looking for a productive spot to test their horses against stakes level competition.

Originally contested on dirt when the facility was still known as Latonia, the race later transitioned along with the track as Turfway Park introduced synthetic racing surfaces. Today the Bourbonette Oaks is run on Turfway’s Tapeta surface at a distance of 1 1/16 miles. The change in surface has given the race a distinct character, often rewarding fillies with tactical speed and the ability to handle synthetic footing.

In recent years the Bourbonette Oaks has taken on additional importance as part of the Road to the Kentucky Oaks. The race awards qualifying points that help determine the field for the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. Its position on the calendar allows trainers to use the race as a valuable late prep while evaluating whether their fillies are ready to compete on racing’s biggest stage.

While not every winner ultimately goes on to Churchill Downs, the Bourbonette Oaks regularly produces competitive performances from fillies on the rise. The event remains an important part of the spring prep season and a highlight of the Turfway Park meet, offering fans and bettors an early look at horses who may emerge as contenders later in the year.
