History of the Busanda Stakes

The Busanda Stakes was first run in 1974 at Aqueduct Racetrack and is named in honor of Busanda, a distinguished filly who won the Coaching Club American Oaks and became an influential broodmare. From its inception, the race has served as an early-season test for three year old fillies in New York, offering a longer-distance opportunity at a time when many races are still contested at shorter trips.

Traditionally run at 1 1/8 miles on dirt, the Busanda Stakes has developed a reputation as a stamina-building prep race. Its distance makes it one of the more demanding early stops on the calendar, often favoring fillies with the ability to handle two turns and longer routes. Trainers frequently use the race to gauge whether their runners are suited for the longer distances of spring classics and major stakes.
