History of the Fantasy Stakes

The Fantasy Stakes was first run in 1973 at Oaklawn Park and has grown into one of the most important spring races for three year old fillies in North America. Contested at 1 1/16 miles on dirt, the race has long served as a major stepping stone on the road to the Kentucky Oaks. Its placement on Oaklawn’s spring calendar often attracts many of the top developing fillies of the season as they prepare for the first Friday in May at Churchill Downs.

Over the decades, the Fantasy Stakes has steadily risen in prominence alongside the broader growth of Oaklawn Park’s racing program. The race was elevated to graded status and eventually earned Grade 2 designation, reflecting the consistent quality of its fields and the success many of its runners have achieved in subsequent major races. As Oaklawn expanded purses and national attention on its racing season increased, the Fantasy Stakes became one of the track’s signature events for fillies.
