History of the Las Virgenes Stakes
The Las Virgenes Stakes was first run in 1983 at Santa Anita Park and has long served as an important early-season test for three year old fillies on the West Coast. Named after the Rancho Las Virgenes area in Southern California, the race was designed to give developing fillies an opportunity to compete in stakes company before stretching out to longer distances later in the spring. Contested at one mile on dirt, it has traditionally emphasized speed while still requiring enough stamina to hint at future success.
Over the years, the Las Virgenes Stakes has attracted many of the top California-based fillies and has played a key role in shaping the West Coast path to the Kentucky Oaks. The race has produced several standout winners, including champions such as Serena's Song, who went on to a Hall of Fame career, and Beholder, a multiple Eclipse Award winner and Breeders’ Cup champion. Their victories helped elevate the race’s profile as a launching pad for elite talent.
The Las Virgenes Stakes has also experienced changes in grading and conditions over time, reflecting shifts in the broader racing landscape. While it has typically been contested as a one-mile dirt race, its role has evolved alongside the introduction of the Road to the Kentucky Oaks points system. Today, it awards qualifying points that contribute toward a starting spot at Churchill Downs, increasing its importance within the national prep schedule.
In recent years, the race has continued to serve as a stepping stone for fillies progressing through Santa Anita’s series of preps, including the Santa Ysabel Stakes and Santa Anita Oaks. Strong performances in the Las Virgenes often signal which runners are ready to take the next step, making it an important early indicator of talent for fans and bettors following the three year old filly division
