History of the Rags to Riches Stakes

The Rags to Riches Stakes was inaugurated in 2022 at Churchill Downs as part of an effort to expand opportunities for two year old fillies late in the season. Named in honor of Rags to Riches, the Belmont Stakes-winning filly, the race reflects a focus on identifying young talent with the potential to develop into top-level performers.

Contested at a route distance on dirt, the Rags to Riches Stakes provides an important early test of stamina for juveniles stretching out beyond sprint distances. Its placement on the calendar gives trainers a valuable opportunity to evaluate fillies around two turns before the end of their two year old campaigns, often helping shape plans for the following season.

In the modern prep structure, the race serves as an early qualifier toward the next year’s Road to the Kentucky Oaks, giving connections a chance to begin accumulating credentials ahead of the main prep series. While still a relatively new addition to the calendar, it plays a growing role in identifying fillies with both the class and stamina to compete at higher levels.

As the race continues to develop, it offers fans and bettors an early look at the next generation of contenders. Strong performances in the Rags to Riches Stakes can signal which young fillies are poised to make an impact when they return as three-year-olds in the spring.
