History of the Starlet Stakes

The Starlet Stakes was first run in 1979 at Hollywood Park Racetrack and quickly became one of the premier races in the country for two year old fillies. Originally contested at 1 1/16 miles, the race provided an early opportunity for top juveniles to prove their ability around two turns. Its timing late in the year made it a key stepping stone toward championship honors and set the stage for the following season’s major races.

Over the years, the Starlet Stakes has produced an impressive list of winners who went on to achieve national prominence. Champions such as Serena's Song, Silverbulletday, and Stellar Wind all used the race as a springboard to successful careers. Their performances helped cement the Starlet’s reputation as a proving ground for elite young fillies.

Following the closure of Hollywood Park in 2013, the race was relocated to Los Alamitos Race Course, where it has continued as a Grade 1 event. Despite the change in venue, the race has maintained its stature and continues to attract high-quality fields from leading West Coast stables. Its distance and conditions have remained largely consistent, preserving its role as a demanding test of both speed and stamina.

Today, the Starlet Stakes remains one of the most important juvenile filly races in the United States.
