History of the Untapable Stakes

The Untapable Stakes was first run in 2021 at Fair Grounds, where the track’s condition book listed it as the 1st Running of the race. It was created as a one mile and one sixteenth dirt stakes for two year old fillies, giving late-season juveniles at Fair Grounds a route test and an early chance to stand out in a division that would soon turn toward the spring classics.

In its first few years, the race quickly became a meaningful launching point for promising fillies at Fair Grounds. Rather than serving only as a local juvenile stakes, the Untapable grew in importance as the national prep structure evolved. For the 2025-26 season, it is part of the Road to the Kentucky Oaks and awards points on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale to the top five finishers, giving the race a direct connection to the Kentucky Oaks trail.

That change has elevated the race’s profile and made it more than just an end-of-year stakes for juveniles. Because it is contested around two turns, the Untapable can reveal fillies with the stamina and class to progress into major preps as three year olds. As a result, it now serves as both a showcase for rising young talent and an increasingly relevant early step on the path toward Churchill Downs.
