History of the Gun Runner Stakes

A new entry into the Road to the Kentucky Derby prep races in 2021, the Gun Runner Stakes joins an already chalk-full racing season at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

The race is named in honor of of the 2017 Horse of the Year Gun Runner, who kicked off his 2016 season with a fantastic showing at the Fair Grounds, capturing wins at both the Risen Star Stakes and the Louisiana Derby. Two more graded stakes wins made him an early contender in that years’ Kentucky Derby, where he ultimately captured third place. Gun Runner bounced back in his four year old season winning five out of six races, including

an impressive victory in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic, where he trounced the 2016 winner Arrogate after failing to defeat him in two previous races (the 2016 Travers Stakes and the 2017 Dubai World Cup).
