History of the Street Sense Stakes

The Street Sense Stakes was inaugurated in 2013 (October 27) and named in honor of Street Sense, the champion two-year-old of 2006 who went on to win the 2007 Kentucky Derby. Originally run at one mile for two-year-olds on dirt, the race was created to spotlight emerging juvenile talent late in the year and to add depth to the fall program at Churchill Downs.

In the years since its inception, the distance was increased to 1 1⁄16 miles, aligning it more directly with major Derby-prep routes for young horses. The race steadily gained in prestige, and in 2020 it was upgraded to Grade III status. That elevation reinforced its value as a meaningful stepping-stone on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, with the winner often turning heads on the trail ahead.

Throughout its history, the Street Sense Stakes has produced several standout winners who went on to bigger successes, underscoring its role as a proving ground. With a purse around $200,000 and scheduled each October, it continues to attract ambitious two-year-olds aiming to make a name for themselves before the spotlight of spring.
