About the Crown Oaks

Crown Oaks is one of the premier staying races for three year old fillies hosted by Victoria Racing Club during the Melbourne spring racing carnival.

The 2500 metre race is worth $1 million in prize money and is held on the third of the four-day racing carnival at Flemington Racecourse in November, two days after the Melbourne Cup. The race is the female equivalent of the 2500 M Victoria Derby for colts and geldings. Better performing fillies have a distinct advantage as they tack to the track under set weights conditions. While there is action for the fillies on the track, there is also plenty of high fashion off the track, on what is considered ‘Ladies Day', the most glamorous of meetings during the carnival.

Crown Oaks History

First held in 1859 and under the title VRC Oaks, the race was held over 12 furlongs. This distance stood until 1973 when the current 2500m was fixed. The timing and distance of this event make it a very tough race. Held at the end of many horses’ spring campaigns, horses that succeed are proven turf performers with great stamina and fight.
